Meet the artist Carol Bruton

Carol Bruton in a nutshell?

I was born in Toronto, Canada and my childhood was spent in Spain, a country I still visit regularly.

Your artistic singularity: what are the major themes you pursue in your work?

I swim under the surface of the sea throughout the year and it is the images that I see above me floating on the surface of the water, that provide the inspiration for my WATER series. The combination of sky, clouds and movement of the water create the translucent lozenges of colour. I then use a number of fine brushes to paint a blend of pigments into the glass effect medium. My series RIPPLES reflect my fascination for the sea. This work is cast in translucent resin with detail in a mirrored glass effect.

Your encounter with art: how did you first get interested in your medium, and what draws you to it?

At an early age, I was fascinated by the movement of colour applied on raw canvas. I then moved into gel liquids of resin, which most reflected my search for translucent water mass.
My obsession is with the gentle flow of ocean RIPPLES and I am now working with Crystal Caviar in the Czech Republic to create a translucent sculpture showing these ripples in their most elegant form. These will be ready to view in the next few weeks.

An artist or an artwork which particularly inspires you?

I have found that Mark Rothko’s lozenges of colour have always filled me with awe and wonderment.
