Meet the artist Pavel Wolberg

Please introduce yourself to us!

Pavel Wolberg (born 1966 in Leningrad, [St Petersburg,Russia] USSR) I am a visual artist and a former photojournalist living in Tel Aviv.

What does art mean to you and what story do you want to tell with your art?

To me art in general is an empty word and it means nothing to me, I can only talk about my work with photography as an artist I can only say that I am looking at the world and reacting to it with photography.

When working on a new project, what are the first steps you take?

When I am working on a new project first of all I am thinking on a concept and than making the contacts and travelling to see if it works in the real world.

Has your approach and process changed throughout your artistic career?

I can say that now I am thinking about and planing the projects much more than before and working much more slowly. Yes some things changed during my career. In the beginning of my career I was mostly reacting with photography and after that looking for concepttoday I am thinking about the concept in advance.

Can you tell us a little about your portrait photography and your photographs of places in the Ukraine?

The name of this project in Ukraine is ”ATO”- which means – Anti Terror Operation zone, it is the name that the Ukrainian authorities use for the conflict zone in East Ukraine, this conflict is entering its fourth year, and it is getting harder and harder to understand what it is exactly about, this series shows people and places in this zone. This is a part of a bigger project about former Soviet Union, borders and identity.
