Sanders was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, on June 3, 1906 in the house number 6 of the Petrovsky Island, had an older brother, actor Tom Conway, who died in 1967, and a younger sister, Margaret, and worked for a time in the British theater before making his film debut in Love, Life and Laughter in 1934, and appeared in a 1936 Hollywood film called Lloyds of London.
From the same year until 1954, Sanders played the role of the Saint in John Farrow’s detective film The Saint Strikes Back and reprized the role in The Saint in London, Mr. MGM used him as a villain in Bittersweet (1940) and he played a similar role to Edward Small in Son of Monte Cristo (1940), in which he both appeared (and Sanders was killed).
