In 1962, Dines’work was incorporated in Walter Hopps’ historic and revolutionary New Picture of Shared Objects by Walter Hopps in Norton Simon Museum in stark contrast to the darker moods of popular expressionists in New York art.
Dines’ art was the subject of more than 300 solo exhibitions, including retrospective exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York (1970) and the Museum of Modern Art in New York (1978); Minneapolis Walker Art Center (1984-85) ); Frederick Meier Garden and Sculpture Park in Grand Rapids, Michigan (2011) and Folkwang Museum in Essen (2015-16). His works are in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Paris
Dines’ first formal art training took place at evening art classes in Cincinnati Academy of Arts, where he entered at the age of 16 ” ‘old” while attending Walnut Hills High School in 1952.
Although he can be considered a pop artist, his unwavering determination to do things his own way has created a highly individualistic and varied body of work over four decades: painting, performance, drawing, poetry, printmaking, book design, sculpture, photography and much more.
He is one of America’s greatest living draftsmen and his depictions of tools, large scale nude, self-portraits and sketches from life and after antiquity are among the most beautiful and realized drawings of our time. His art has been the subject of numerous solo and group exhibitions and is in permanent collections in museums around the world. His A Day Longer exhibition at the Galerie Templon, Paris, showcases the work that he has done over the last three years, many of which ended during the First Lockdown.
It includes a new corpus of self-portraits as well as bronze sculptures and his easily recognizable paintings in which he uses tools and symbols from his personal iconography such as hearts, skulls, veins and the comic strip Pinocchio.
