Max Ernst, fully Maximilian Maria Ernst (born April 2, 1891 in Bruhl — April 1, 1976 in Paris, France ), is a German painter and sculptor who was the leading proponent of irrationality in art and the creator of the automatism movement of surrealism, and was a naturalized citizen of the United States (1948) and France (1958).
Ernst’s first interests were psychiatry and philosophy, but he dropped out of the University of Bonn to paint. What admired American artists about Ernst’s work was his indecision with traditional styles and images in painting ; these techniques were largely borrowed from the styles of his father, which he refused to follow in his later work. As young American artists became more interested in new and innovative approaches to painting, this unique style of Ernst attracted the attention of the artists exhibiting in his work.
He continued to invent new ways of creating and combining images, some calculated, some involuntary, claiming that his main sources of interest include anything related to painting, and noted his admiration for the creative efforts of those considered mentally ill.
He also used automatism, which is a kind of flow of a deliberate approach to art – he painted, sculpted, wrote books, sketched, organized living art – he was an artist and creator in every sense of the word, while his interest in painting and sketching in nature prompted Max to devote himself to painting.

Max Ernst, Joan Miró, Salvador Dali and Rene Magritte were the main figures responsible for creating the golden age of surrealism. Ernst died in 1976 but his legacy has survived as it continued to serve as an inspiration to artists around the world. The war dance of the alleged angel is indeed one of the most sinister imagery in contemporary painting.
