Interview with Alejandro Debonis

Please introduce yourself

I have always been close to art and painting. My father was a painter – as a hobby – and my uncle a painting teacher who specialized in portraits. In terms of my studies, I started several university degrees but didn’t finish them. My last degree, however – in architecture, ended up defining what would become my vocation. From there, I was able to exhibit in different places both at home and abroad.

The opportunity to work in a gallery in the Caribbean completely changed my artistic career; this was the moment I set my theme, palette and focus on luminosity, and realized that I really had a passion for this job.

What does art mean to you?

Art is a synonym for freedom, through which I can communicate with people and share their experience. There is an intimate relationship that invites the public to enter my work; a window to discover unique elements and silent sensations.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I’ve long been developing a strong visual memory. For the topics I use in my art, this visual memory merges with lived experiences, creativity and fantasy. These elements mostly contribute to the beginning of a painting, where the inspiration is usually a result of regular and daily work. It is a discipline, which is fed daily.

Is there a particular material/technique that you prefer to work with?

My technique is acrylic painting and mixed media on canvas or wood. In many cases, I incorporate other materials to enrich the work with nuance. Throughout the development of my work, I capture the tastes or needs of the moment we are living in.

Could you please tell us a few words about the last event you participated in?

Make a Wish Argentina is a benefit event that artists participate in for the common good. It consists of raising money through auctioned paintings to support children with serious and delicate illnesses. In Buenos Aires, Argentina, this organization is chaired by Mrs. Monica Parisier and an excellent group of collaborators, who really strive to achieve this goal with great affection towards the children and their parents.
